EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
