Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
